TAYLOR
614-CE sPRING LIMITED
SPECS.
- Taylor 600 series, Grand Auditorium body
- Macassar Ebony back and sides
- Englemann Spruce top
- Ebony fretboard
BACKSTORY
Normally I prefer the tone of Grand Symphony Taylors, but for some reason Grand Auditoriums with exotic wood really shine. The brightness and overtones make this acoustic one of the best I've ever heard. I used to say the same thing about my koa Grand Symphony but this ebony one was next level. I ended up selling the koa because of it.
The biggest problem with this Spring Limited is also its best feature- all the ebony! I love it, but New York living isn't kind to ebony. We have icy/dry winters and hot/humid summers that make it impossible to properly protect it. The Macassar cracked on the back, but it still sounds amazing.
At the time it was built, Bob Taylor was really into changing guitar culture to accept ebony for its variations. By using more of the sapwood on ebony trees, he could use 100% of felled trees instead of the 10% that are jet black. As a result I was able to get this amazing combo without having to pay a crazy custom price and Taylor was able to change forestry practices in Cameroon.
